Remember when Cole Beasley left the team and said the Buffalo Bills had better facilities? Although it was a long time ago, Dalton Schultz sparked a bit of a stir when he mentioned the facility after leaving for the Houston Texans in recent years.
During the week of Super Bowl LIX, another former player recorded it all. I spoke with Peyton Hendershot during the Kansas City Chiefs availability on Wednesday morning while I was in New Orleans. The Cowboys asked questions, but we had a wonderful conversation about Hendershot’s career, his time at Indiana, what it’s like to be in this game, and all the other obvious topics.
When asked about the pomp and circumstance associated with playing for America’s Team, Hendershot pointed out that there is a great difference between his current team and old one, and Similar to how former Cowboys have done it in the past.
Hendershot spoke very respectfully about the Cowboys. His tone was not one of malice or trying to stir the pot. He answered the question graciously and in the most honest way that he could. People shouldn’t read anything negative into this.
However, Hendershot reaffirmed what veterans of the Cowboys had already stated: the Chiefs, his club, are all about football and winning.
In the tweet above he mentioned “extracurriculars” are more of a priority with the Cowboys, and if you listen to the whole clip you will hear him say things like autograph signings and picture opportunities. He brought some real depth to this subject that has been encircling the team for some time.
In fact, one of the first questions I had for Hendershot about the Cowboys was concerning the previous offseason. As you may remember, he was dealt to Kansas City in August, so his life has been quite hectic ever since the season began.
He brought up the CeeDee Lamb contract when asked if that was the pandemonium of the previous offseason that we all witnessed. Like us, he expressed confusion about why the Cowboys took so long to complete it and mentioned that Lamb’s absence was significant. He even said that they didn’t see Lamb for four or five months.
To leave things on a positive note, when asked what the Cowboys are getting in Brian Schottenheimer since he worked with him, he noted that he doesn’t exactly know Schottenheimer that well, but he did offer a fair endorsement so to speak.
Former Dallas Cowboys tight end Peyton Hendershot captured headlines with a pretty curious comparison between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cowboys. Recently, during an interview, he stated, “They care more about winning than anything else. The Cowboys are more like extracurriculars.” His statements have caused myriad discussions, raising debate among NFL fans, analysts, and former players.
A Winning Culture: The Chiefs Way of Championship Thinking
The Kansas City Chiefs, as defined by their master head coach Andy Reid and his superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, have, over the past few years, cemented themselves into the gold standard of the NFL.
Their never-ending pursuit of success is apparent through their Super Bowl wins and regular playoff participation.
- Leadership and Stability: The Chiefs have managed to create a stable organization with a clear vision for success. General manager Brett Veach has carefully assembled a roster that balances elite talent and strong team chemistry.
- A Winning Quarterback: Mahomes’ work ethic, talent, and leadership set the tone for the entire franchise. His ability to rally the team in crucial moments has been a defining factor in the Chiefs’ dominance.
- Strong Coaching Philosophy: Andy Reid’s offensive ingenuity has maintained the Chiefs one step ahead. His flexible call-making and getting the most out of his personnel have been significant factors in his team’s triumph.
Dallas Cowboys: A Glitz and Glamour Team?
Dallas Cowboys are perhaps one of the most valuable sports franchises, but on-field performances have not reached expectations. As Hendershot says, a growing concern about the team’s focus on too much media hype, branding, and non-football activities is slowly creeping in.
Lack of Success in the Postseason: With such a great team, the Cowboys have failed to get further than the NFL’s
- Deep postseason play. They won the last Super Bowl way back in 1995, and since then, they could not go any further than the NFC Championship.
- Impacts of Jerry Jones: Owner Jerry Jones always wants to be attached to all affairs, which sometimes seems to override a desire to win a championship when building a marketable brand.
- High Expectations, Low Results: The Cowboys are always excited with each season’s arrival, but they never do it when it matters.
Fans and Experts’ Reactions
Hendershot’s remarks have been met with mixed reactions. Some analysts concur that Kansas City is purely focused on football, while the Cowboys are more focused on the entertainment aspect of the game. Others say Dallas is still a serious contender but cannot execute when it matters most.
NFL Analysts Weigh In
Former NFL players and analysts have also chimed in:
- Shannon Sharpe: “There’s no question that the Cowboys are a great franchise, but their priorities seem different than the Chiefs’. Kansas City is about winning championships.”
- Stephen A. Smith: “I’ve been saying for years—the Cowboys are an accident waiting to happen. They sell hope more than they sell results.”
- Michael Irvin (Former Cowboys WR): “I understand the frustration, but the Cowboys have talent. It’s about executing when it matters.”
- Can the Cowboys Change the Narrative?
